Received of John Logan twenty six Dolars in full of all book acounts this 21 December 1811

James Cooper

This is the last John Logan document from 1811. I promise that these documents become more detailed as the years progress but these early ones leave a lot to be desired.  What was John purchasing from James for $26? $26 was worth about $340 in 1811 which is no small sum.

I am not an expert on the family of James Cooper.  My goal is to get this information out there in hopes that someone can provide us with more background information on this document and on James Cooper.  Someone posted on the Cooper Genforum that there was a James born about 1776 in Orange County, NC the son of Alexander Cooper.  They stated that the Coopers lived in Lunenburge County, VA, Orange County, NC, Rutherford County, NC and finally White County, TN. There was a James Cooper who was listed in the 1812 tax list in White County, TN but I believe this to be a different James.

There was an Alexander Cooper that purchased land in Rutherford County, NC in 1787 so this very well could James’ father.

Now we know that the James Cooper in this document was in Rutherford at the end of 1811. I also know that James married Susanah “Suckey” Webb in Rutherford County, NC on November 23, 1813. The bondsman was J. McEntire and witness was James O. Lewis.

Then there is this court case in Rutherford County that dragged out from 1815 to 1825, which James was heavily involved in. He was also living right next to John Logan according to the 1820 census and there was also another James Cooper living in White County, TN at the same time.  This James was also living in Rutherford County, NC in 1830.

If you have additional information about this James Cooper, Please leave a comment below.

  1. My ancestor James Cooper is the son of Alexander Cooper. He was born in 1776 in North Carolina and died in about 1830 in White County, TN. Let me sort through what I have and try to help if I can.

  2. Logan is a name that appears often in my Cooper line. My Coopers were from Wales. They eventually settled in the are that is now Ky. I am related to several Moses and James Coopers. A Eunice Cooper Paul, who was a sister in law of John Paul Jones , married James guthrie, a prominant figure in Ky history. My family is the Bates family. the bate’s were coopers by trade, and close friends and family members with the Coopers, which makes me wonder of Cooper was theirreal name, or their occupation , which they took as their name when coming to America?thanks
